Keekorok Lodge Maasai Mara

History is not something most safari lodges can claim with credibility. But Muthu Keekorok Lodge Maasai Mara can.

Constructed in 1962 and opened in 1965, it holds the distinction of being the first lodge ever built inside Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve. It has stood in the reserve's southern grasslands for over six decades and welcomed dignitaries including Kenya's founding president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Prince Charles, and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Few properties anywhere in East Africa carry that kind of weight.

The name Keekorok means "place of black trees" in the Maasai language. Others translate it as "diverse abundance." Both descriptions fit. The lodge sits on 80 acres of permanent springs and lush savannah grassland in the heart of the reserve. Wildlife surrounds the property at all times.

Furthermore, the lodge occupies a position directly in the path of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Between July and October, over two million animals move through this precise stretch of the Mara. River crossings happen dramatically and without warning. Consequently, guests at Muthu Keekorok Lodge during migration season witness one of the greatest natural spectacles on Earth without travelling far from their rooms.

The reserve delivers year-round. Lions patrol the grasslands on their own terms. Leopards move silently through the riverine forest at dusk. Additionally, the waterhole visible from the lodge grounds attracts a constant and unpredictable procession of wildlife throughout every day. Hippos and crocodiles occupy the Mara River below. Over 500 bird species fill the skies above. As a result, no two days at Muthu Keekorok Lodge produce the same experience.

The lodge twice appeared on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List of the world's favourite safari lodges. It also holds the distinction of being crowned Kenya's first luxury safari lodge by the World Travel Awards.

The accommodation comprises 89 stone-built en-suite double rooms, 8 superior rooms with private terraced hammocks, and 4 suites with full living areas. Every room features a private balcony with views into the reserve or the lodge's expansive gardens. Pillow menus, laptop-compatible safes, and laptop-friendly workspaces reflect the standard of modern comfort that runs throughout the property.

The main restaurant opens onto a verandah and serves African, Asian, and Western cuisine across buffet and a la carte formats. Guests dine indoors or outside depending on preference. Three bars serve the lodge - the Pool Bar, the Hippo Bar, and the Lounge Bar. Moreover, the Lounge Bar carries a fine collection of whiskies and cigars alongside freshly ground Kenyan coffee. Bush dinners on the banks of the Mara River add a spectacular outdoor dining option for guests seeking something beyond the restaurant.

A Kenya safari holiday that includes Muthu Keekorok Lodge connects travellers with more than wildlife. It connects them with the history of conservation and tourism in East Africa. Alaskan World Adventures is proud to include this landmark property in our Kenya portfolio. Therefore, when you book through us, your Maasai Mara experience carries the full weight of that remarkable legacy.
