Samburu Sopa Lodge
Most Kenya safari destinations sit in the south. Samburu Sopa Lodge goes north.
Perched atop the Koitogor Hills on elevated ground inside Kenya's Samburu National Reserve, this lodge delivers something that few properties in the country can offer - a front-row seat to a genuinely different Africa. The landscape here is semi-arid and dramatic. The skies are wide and unpolluted. Moreover, the wildlife is unlike anything found on the southern safari circuit.
Samburu National Reserve covers 165 square kilometres of rugged northern Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River cuts through it, dividing Samburu from the Buffalo Springs Reserve to the south and forming the northern border of the Shaba Reserve to the east. Along the river's banks, doum palm groves and dense riverine forest create ribbons of lush green against the dry scrubland beyond. Furthermore, the reserve forms part of a far larger conservation area that incorporates Buffalo Springs and Shaba, allowing wildlife to migrate freely across an enormous combined ecosystem.
What makes Samburu truly special, however, is the Samburu Special Five. These are five rare species found almost exclusively in this northern region of Kenya - the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx, and gerenuk. No other reserve in Kenya concentrates these animals in the same way. Additionally, lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, hippos, and over 350 bird species share the reserve with its more unusual residents. As a result, every game drive into Samburu produces sightings that guests simply cannot replicate anywhere else in the country.
Samburu Sopa Lodge reflects the heritage of the community that surrounds it. The architecture draws directly from centuries-old traditional Samburu housing. Fifteen stone cottages sit in an arch formation on either side of the public areas, each containing two spacious guest rooms and facing the lodge's exclusive waterhole. The design deliberately leaves a wide gap in the formation to allow animals free movement to the water. Consequently, guests watch elephants, giraffes, zebras, and antelope arrive at the waterhole directly from their verandas, from the restaurant, and from the swimming pool area - without a game vehicle required.
Each of the 60 rooms features two queen-size beds, a large dressing table, a lavishly appointed en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, high ceilings, large windows, and a low stone-walled open-air veranda overlooking the waterhole. Two interconnecting wheelchair-accessible rooms sit closest to the reception area. The dining room raises slightly above the lounge level, sharing the same totally open-air atmosphere. Curvaceous buffet tables and live cooking areas present generous fusions of international and local cuisine alongside garden-fresh fruits and vegetables. The main bar sits adjacent to the lounge and connects naturally to the poolside sunken bar - where Samburu's famous clear equatorial skies appear overhead and the waterhole sits just beyond.
That sky, moreover, is worth a mention of its own. Samburu Sopa Lodge now offers a dedicated stargazing experience. A manyatta-shaped planetarium on the grounds hosts immersive sky shows. An astrophysicist and trained Samburu cultural astronomers combine science with indigenous celestial knowledge in guided evening sessions. It is one of the most unexpected and remarkable activities available at any safari lodge in Kenya.
